The Christmas Countdown: 11 ways to prepare your home for the Festive Season!

If you are one of the many people who love Christmas but loathe the preparation required, let us help you to lessen the Christmas cleaning calamity. Read on for some helpful tips on how to prepare and make your cleaning in the run up to Christmas, easy!

To prepare we suggest making a plan in advance by breaking all the tasks down into small sections. This way you don’t overwhelm yourself by starting a whole load of jobs and then quickly wish you hadn’t started! The most simple way to do this is by selecting the rooms that will be used the most over Christmas and focusing on them first.

Christmas Countdown Cleaning tips

  1. Arrange a time where you can be focused on the job of decluttering. Begin by clearing out any old toys and any unwanted goods that you no longer need. You can sell them on your local selling sites and add the extra cash to your Christmas funds or donate to it charity. By getting rid of these items you easily make room for the new.

  2. Start clearing a few kitchen drawers and cupboards at a time every other day in the run up to Christmas to remind yourself of what you have stored and what you still need. It’s amazing how much extra space you can accumulate by emptying a drawer waiting on the kettle boiling.

  3. Make a Christmas area/allocated space in your home for all the Christmas presents as well as your food and snacks. You also may wish to defrost your freezer now, or think about saving a freezer drawer specifically for your delicious food shop.

  4. Clear and arrange your food cupboards to make room for extra festive food and make a list of the essentials you will need to buy over Christmas. Use the allocated space for the items you’ve bought in advance and mark them off each week. You may even end up organised enough that you won’t need to do any last minute food shopping this year!

  5. Clean your oven thoroughly to prepare for cooking a Christmas feast. A sparkling clean oven is more efficient, creates less smoke and burning, allows the smell of your delicious dinner to waft out, filling the house with the mouth-watering scent of turkey and roast vegetables! If you are too busy why not call us? Then you could spend the free time to shop, wrap or prepare in another way.

  6. Tis the season to be cleaning and the run up to Christmas is our busiest period of the year! If you are planning to take care of it yourself this is the time to cleaning underneath sofas, dusting the skirtings and corners, Each week allocate a room that’s needs a deeper clean and complete in sections. Dust your blinds, radiators, furniture tops, bookshelves and photo frames. Then hoover any residue to ensure it doesn’t land anywhere else.

  7. A few days before you start your Christmas Tree Masterpiece 2024 you will want to take out and arrange your decorations, check the lights are working and nothings been broken etc. This way you’re completely prepared with everything you need before your actual decorating day.

  8. Bathrooms are a priority and to get yours sparkling before Christmas guests arrive, make sure to clean the shower and sink with an all-purpose spray, and don't forget to fluff up the bath mat to be extra soft for guests. Flush the toilet, then pour a cupful of bleach into the rim of the bowl and leave to sit for five minutes. Tra-La-La-La-La-La-La-La-La!

  9. Make sure that your prepped with sellotape, gift bags, wrapping paper and plenty of batteries. These are especially handy at times when the kids are receiving new gifts as well. Make a date in your diary for sitting down and wrapping your presents. If you leave it to last minute it could leave you up until the wee hours of the day itself. Plan ahead or buy gifts bags instead of wrapping. These are excellent to recycle and reuse as well.

  10. Keeping your gorgeous glazed windows is essential for the festive season. They’ll let in more natural light and ensure your Christmas tree and other holiday lights look their brightest when viewed from outside. Vinegar, an all-natural and nontoxic cleaner, mixed with warm water is an effective and environmentally friendly glass-cleaning solution.

  11. Finally, why not set the dinner table the night before to ensure the big day is as stress-free as possible. Then pour yourself your favourite drink and start to enjoy the festivities because you've certainly earned it!

Dont forget to make it fun! - Don't look at cleaning your home as a huge dreaded chore. As magical as Christmas can be it can also be an added pressure for many. Share the jobs in your household to each member where you can and remember there’s a few things you can do to make cleaning fun. Put on some christmas music (or anything you want to listen to!!) to keep your mood and energy levels up. It’s incredible how much you can get done just listening to one song! You can also make cleaning into a fun game for your kids to get involved too. If you're a lover of organisation, why not make a checklist & tick off each job so you complete it. If you’re not a lover of pre-Christmas cleaning, we can do it for you! See here for details.

However you do this Christmas, having an organised and clean environment sets the stage for a seamless experience during the festive celebrations. Now, let the magic of Christmas fill your home as you create memorable times for your loved ones!
